Arcadia or Aetna?

Shape I-8058 & II-180

This vase in this shape poses an interesting question:  "Could this be an example of the elusive decor known as "Aetna" or is this an example of an error entered into the decors section of der Musterschnitte (the master paper pattern book)?

Looking at the decors section of this book, "Aetna" is one of the 3 decors produced in Series I-8058 and one of the 13 decors produced in II-180. (Note: both Band 2 and the new book, "Loetz/Series II" have identical decor listings for this shape.) Neither I-8058 nor II-180 mentions the decor "Arcadia".  All of the decors listed for I-8058 & II-180 except "Aetna"are known and identifiable.

So the questions begin: 1) Was an Arcadia decor produced in this shape but assigned a different shape number (this happens when the shape is the same but the sizes vary)?; 2) Was an Arcadia decor produced in this shape but left out of the decor listings for these production numbers?; 3) Could the names Aetna & Arcadia be interchangeable?; 4) Could the different decorations on the vases create a decor name variance?; 5) Is the "Aetna" decor entry in der Musterschnitte for this shape an error? It makes one wonder, doesn't it?

While all of the questions above are plausible, the likely answers are the first and/or second questions.  Even though the records of the Loetz productions are very detailed, we know that some of the information is missing and there were also errors and misspellings entered into these records. Based on empirical data, we believe this vase is an example of Arcadia. However, should new documentation present itself, we would certainly re-evaluate this classification.

This discussion also reminds us to ask if anyone has a documented example of "Aetna" or any other decor not already mentioned on this site, we would very much appreciate receiving a photo along with the appropriate documentation so we can share this information with the rest of our viewers!
